Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Roux-en-Y commonly known as gastric bypass is one common type of weight-loss surgery. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves two steps. During bypass surgery, a small pouch is created by dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of the stomach. A loop of intestine is cut; one end of the loop is brought up and is attached to the pouch. The other end is reconnected to the intestine. Food then bypasses most of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This causes the body to absorb fewer calories from the food that was eaten. In addition to its many healthy benefits, bariatric surgery can help improve patient’s overall mood and psychological health. Many patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery experience rapid weight loss following the procedure and continue to lose weight months and years later.

Gastric bypass creates a bypass of the stomach to the small intestine. This direct connection between the stomach and small intestine changes the absorption rate of food and decreases the amount that can be ingested. The bypassed section is still attached to the main part of the stomach. This procedure can be reversed if necessary.

After surgery, you can expect to stay in hospital for 2-3 days. It is very important to follow post-operative instructions after surgery which includes:

  • A clear liquid diet for at least 2 weeks
  • Regular exercise
